Another thing I'm looking forward to tonight--the Alexander vs. Penland intramural dodgeball game at 10. As much as I'd like to cheer on the HC-LLC guys, I'm sorry, Alexander is going to be annihilated. It should be fun to watch.
I haven't posted in a veeeeery long time. I don't know, I haven't done much except pack and get driven down here. I've been sick all week, and I haven't had the energy to do much in terms of eating and [caffeine! not a naughty college student, don't worry!] drinking except going to the cafeteria next door, and when I'm especially ambitious or too sleepy to go on, hauling my bum to Common Grounds. (Gooooood stuff...I think they do more chocolate in their iced mochas than Mondo's or Starbucks did, plus iced versions of peculiar teas--the only ones worth drinking.)
I need a pedicure. My feet look like they've been attacked by one of Baylor's supposed "ninja squirrels." (I've heard a story about them flinging nuts from trees on move-in day and another story about one jumping out of a tree on to a guy.) The walking has given me big, nasty gashes all over my feet. I have a really bad one on my right heel and it hurts like heck. One evening, I gave up and wore SpongeBob slippers for the rest of the day. Is that bad that I'm already not caring what I look like and it's only the first week of class? I'll care more once I'm better because I tend to be sort of vain like that, but until then, I'll stay to myself and hope I don't infect anyone. The health center said it may be a sinus infection. Fabulous...*con sarcasmo* Luckily, it seems to be going away but I think the feeling of exhaustion is still there. It's like a heavy feeling in my chest that makes it really hard to breathe right now, plus the fact that I tend to try not to breathe out of my mouth when I'm well.
I think I found an okay pedicure place in the Lariat (school newspaper) today: Princess Nails. I'm hoping it's at this end of Bagby and I don't have to walk too far. I'd cry if I got them done all nice and clean and then messed it up from tripping on something on the way back. There was a five-dollar-off coupon in the paper, so I'm hoping it's in walking distance.
There was also an ad for heeb [H.E.B.--a central Texas grocery store chain] delis in the Lariat...they have SUSHI! Unfortunately, the one that's closest to Baylor doesn't have a deli. THIS IS WHY I NEED MY CAR BACK! I need to go to the safe heeb on Sunday night when the dorm food is closed and I can get sushi for dinner without fear of being mugged, harmed, or violated in any way! (The closest one, known affectionately as the "ghetto heeb" is apparently not a good place to be after dark. The "super heeb" towards Hewitt supposedly also has Jolt, which I must try because it's been a major topic on the BIC message board and I feel like a failure as a caffeine junkie for not having at least tried it.)
Aside from that, it's beautiful here. My professors are nice. My classmates are nice. Absolutely everyone is so nice! Now I know why I immediately thought Washingtonians were so weird and mean. I came from niceness, and it's good to be back. People say "please" and "excuse me" and aren't giving me stupid freshman looks when I'm lost, I trip or stumble, or I run into something. I'm at the end of campus that's close to Common Grounds, I'm close to all of my classes (hooray for not being a science major and not having to hike to the new science building!), and I'm in the quiet dorm where it's okay to study. The mysterious fourth floor is interesting--one storage room was so neat-looking that I sketched it for my World of Rhetoric class. It's the one over the porch with the giant columns in front of the building. Anyway, it was a really nice clear day the other day, so the blue sky cast this medium-blue glow through the circular window in the room, barely illuminating much at all, but it was very pretty. I'll have to post it in the Chum Bucket's doodles section--it's not in color, but it came out sort of good.
When I get better and find energy and a tolerable eatery, I shall have to skip happily through the well-maintained lawns and under the big deciduous trees. (Yay leaves! Touchable trees! Not prickly evergreens! Whoo-hoo!) Anyway, even though I'm shaky and I can't stand up at the moment, and I desperately need a Dillard's run and lots of alone time with nerdy country blasting at top volume, I think I'm going to like it here. The BIC is fun stuff--hooray for discussions! One of the other professors, Prof. Kamperman, used to live down the street from me! I don't have her class, but they team-teach a lot of stuff in the BIC, so, yay! (I wonder if Robert's here?) Today, in World Cultures, we had to draw Plato's cave from "The Allegory of the Cave" with crayons in groups of three. Yay doodling and having fun with serious readings! Sure, we had to explain the meaning of the scene that we drew, but that was painless and the other classmates are pretty smart. Tuesday, I hope I feel better, because I'm hoping to try and register to vote here during the long break. Yay for poli sci geekdom! Anyway, I need to get off here and do some homework before going to this "Late Night at the SLC [student life center]" thing...supposedly all the organizations are going to be there, so I'll find out about a pre-law society and fall parties for joining sororities. Maybe I'll try out the interesting pool in the SLC with the waterslides and the current stream-thingy and try to ease my achey body. Supposedly the entire thing is only three feet deep or so. Hooray for chilling out in a shallow pool in a swimsuit that's two sizes too small? Eh, maybe not, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern will seek revenge, but fail because that pool sounds like tons of fun.
One of my small group leaders for Welcome Week, Natalie, went to Spring Valley Elementary. I knew her sister in second grade, but her sister's not going here. Oh well, still interesting. Yay Spring Valley! I also found a ride to my old church--whoo-hoo! I tried a different Presbyterian church here, but it just didn't feel right--it was a reformed one, and I'm used to just the regular one, so yay for going back to First Presbyterian! I'm really excited--I was looking up potential places to go on the internet, and I came across their website, and I was really impressed. It had a whole lot about the history of the building (which is spectacular! I haven't seen it recently, but it's one that's really old with a huuuuuuge pipe organ and tons of really pretty stained glass windows--quite an inspiring place to see that people did all that work on the building just to spread the word of God and praise Him), the meanings behind all the stained glass windows (I think there were a set dedicated to the Apostles, and they even explained which one got left out and why--I think it was Judas?), what they believe at their church, and what they do at their services. Anyway, I was impressed. (The Chum Bucket took me a lot longer to do than it looks--I appreciate a good website!)
But...in the words of Mrs. Gresham from third grade, I digress.
